Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her mother and grandmother. She is an only-child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to become an instructor of English in a secondary school. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she dropped out of school. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. Through the Roots performance, she announced her artist status. Afterwards she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. She became the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
